From the 17th to the 19th century, paintings often depicted the kings and queens of France adorned with jewels inspired by clothing. Since its foundation, the Maison has been inspired by these accessories and the French elegance they represent. Amongst these creations, bows have long been a part of Van Cleef & Arpels’ tradition. They are a fundamental element of the world of couture and have always been used as ornamental motifs.

This piece is one of many bows created by the Maison throughout the forties. It depicts a supple ribbon imbued with lightness. Have a look at the diverse textures: the center part of the ribbon is smooth and shiny thanks to the mirror polishing technique, while the openwork sections reproduce the delicacy of lace. As a final touch, diamond flowers adorn the lace framing.

Over the decades, Van Cleef & Arpels has continued to create bows, both simple and elaborate, naturalistic and stylized, that play gracefully with the effects of transparency and volume.
